The JPS Health Promotions program encourages health and wellness by providing you and your family with informative, free health classes.

Our pregnancy and childbirth classes cover:
  • Breastfeeding – Discover why the Academy of Pediatrics recommends breast milk as the best form of nutrition for your baby. Participants will learn about breastfeeding myths, promoting and maintaining milk supply, correct positioning and latch on, and support for the woman desiring to be breastfeed.   • Prenatal and post-partum care – This class provides information on fetal development and a healthy lifestyle during pregnancy. Participants will learn the importance of prenatal care, proper nutrition and routine office visits. To enroll in a class, click here.
  • Prepared childbirth – These classes provide information on normal labor patterns, relaxation, breathing techniques, warning signs and symptoms of premature labor, complications, pain management, postpartum and newborn care. Patients are encouraged to bring a labor partner/coach to each class. To enroll in a class, click here.
  • Infant car seat – This class includes information on Texas laws, proper selection and installation of car safety seats and recommendations to ensure children travel safely. This class includes an actual demonstration of the correct installation of an infant car seat. There is a $10 fee for the infant car seat class instruction, for all clients, planning to deliver at John Peter Smith Hospital. To enroll in a class, click here.
Our prevention/chronic disease classes cover:
  • Diabetes – The diabetes education program provides information on nutrition, controlling blood sugar, self-management skills instruction (glucose monitor, insulin administration), preventing complications, and sick day management. Education is presented in either a one-time class or a series of two classes depending on topic. Class participation is limited to adults eighteen and over. To enroll in a class, click here.
  • Asthma – This class provides a general overview of asthma, signs and symptoms of asthma episodes, identifying asthma triggers, helping children and adults stay active and basic management information. Class participation is limited to individuals thirteen years of age and older. Parents of children of any age that have asthma are welcome. To enroll in a class, click here.
  • High blood pressure/stroke – This class includes a general overview of high blood pressure, the importance of early identification and basic management information. The participant will learn the correlation between high blood pressure and other conditions such as stroke and coronary heart disease. To enroll in a class, click here.
  • Congestive heart failure/stroke – This class offers a general overview of congestive heart failure, signs and symptoms, when to seek health care, self-management skills and basic management information.
  • Smoking cessation – This class will assist the participant to identify the reasons for smoking and how smoking can effect your health and the health of others. Information on the different approaches to stop smoking is presented. Follow-up classes are available for those participants desiring reinforcement and support. To enroll in a class, click here.
  • Osteoporosis – Osteoporosis is a disease in which bones become fagile and more likely to break. If not prevented or left untreated, osteoporosis can progress painlessly until a bone breaks. This class offers a general overview of osteoporosis, signs, symptoms, risk factors, when to seek health care and basic management information. To enroll in a class, click here.
