History

For over 100 years, John Peter Smith Hospital has been a noted innovator in medical education. In 1999, JPS was one of the first Family Medicine Programs in the nation to start a Geriatrics Fellowship. The fellowship was developed in cooperation with the Geriatrics Department at the University of North Texas.  Since its inception, the fellowship has grown from one fellow in 2000 to four fellows in 2015. As the fellowship had matured, the curriculum has expanded to teach the holistic multi-disciplinary care that the aging population will need and expect.

Over the last decade, the JPS Geriatrics Fellowship has cultivated relationships with our international colleagues in Family Medicine and Geriatric Medicine. JPS Geriatric faculty and fellows have taught Geriatric subjects in Europe, Asia, and South America. Our close relationships have also allowed us to complete joint research projects which were then presented on the international level.
