Resident Life

Life as a resident is one of the most challenging yet rewarding times of your life.  Nothing can really prepare you for it.  You dive in head first from the first day on.  We meet every morning around 6:45 AM to review the in-house patient list and round.  After morning rounds we proceed to all day clinic on Monday and Thursday, and morning only clinic Tuesday.  We have full operating days on Wednesday and Friday covering up to three different facilities where we have anywhere from four to eight cases per day at each facility.

Most of the time, we are running two rooms simultaneously with staff supervision.  The residents perform all of the surgery with staff scrubbing in during appropriate times as needed.  It is not uncommon to operate on clinic days for urgent / emergent cases.  One resident will leave clinic to perform the surgery while the other resident(s) keep the clinic moving.  Our clinics are extremely busy.  We see 40 – 80 patients per day with 2 – 3 residents and occasional student support.  We cover all aspects of foot and ankle care including diabetic feet (exams, wound care, etc.), forefoot reconstruction, rearfoot reconstruction, and foot / ankle trauma (including ankle, calcaneus, talus, and Lisfranc fracture / dislocations).

We currently take call for one week at a time dividing the duties up between three residents each month.  This will be changing in the near future as we are in the process of doubling the size of our program from three residents (one per year) to six (two per year).  We do have a support group through the Resident Alliance Program for spouses and children which includes activities to meet others and provide fun activities.  When you complete our program, you will feel comfortable performing at the highest level in any situation.
