Calling all Blood Donors

January 25th, 2018

The next blood drive at JPS is Thursday, February 1, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the OPC Auditorium. Blood donors are encouraged to reserve a time for donation to help meet the needs of critically ill and injured patients at JPS and throughout North Texas.

J.R. Labbe, vice president of Communications and Community Affairs

Working at a Level I Trauma Center keeps the need for donated blood top of mind, but for some blood donors, it’s personal.

J.R. Labbe, vice president of Communications and Community Affairs, has what’s called “baby blood” because she’s never been exposed to cytomegalovirus (CMV), a nonthreatening virus for most people but potentially severe for newborns with compromised immunity.

“Every time I donate, I look at that red cord running from my arm and literally see life for an infant,” writes Labbe, who is working on her sixth gallon of blood donated over the last 27 years.

“I never had children, so it’s the closest I will ever get to the physical connection every mother experiences with her children.”
