DFW Employee of the Year

Alicia Coomes, RN, a nurse health coach at JPS Health Network, has been awarded the DFW Hospital Council Foundation’s top honor for hospital employees in the Metroplex, praised for improving care for the homeless.

Alicia CoomesA former police officer and dispatcher, Coomes got her start in healthcare as a volunteer for Beautiful Feet Ministries in Fort Worth. Now an RN studying for her bachelor of science in nursing (BSN,) she is RN Nurse Educator for the Care Connections program at JPS.

“Alicia is truly transformative,” said Joel Hunt, director of Care Connections, who nominated Coomes for Employee of the Year. “She has helped transform the way JPS coordinates and provides care, and has brought a new level of health awareness” to JPS’ homeless patients.

“Alicia works tirelessly to ensure that the homeless patients she serves have the best possible access to care, being point-person in coordinating care, following up after hospital discharge, arranging medically and socially complicated nursing home placements, and providing general service coordination among agencies,” said Hunt.

Coomes was among 135 nominees in this year’s Employee of the Year competition. The DFW Hospital Council Foundation presented 15 awards in various categories on April 21 at the organization’s annual Employee of the Year Luncheon. Coomes took the top award, for Employee of the Year among hospitals with more than 500 employees.
