Dr. Helene Alphonso, JPS psychiatrist, is named a Rising Star for the third year in a row.

Rising Stars, featured in the July issue of Texas Monthly magazine, are chosen by the same process used to select Super Doctors, but Rising Stars have been licensed to practice medicine for 10 years or less.

No more than 2.5 percent of the licensed physicians in Texas make the list of Rising Stars, making it among the more selective top doc directories.

The selection process begins with nominations submitted by physicians asked to name colleagues considered exceptional in their specialty. Doctors are asked: “If you needed medical care in one of the following specialties, which doctor would you choose?” Candidates are then evaluated by a research staff using a lengthy list of criteria that includes fellowships, academic achievements and hospital appointments.

Super Doctors is conducted in cities across the country by MSP Communications and published as a supplement in newspapers and magazines, including Texas Monthly. Texas Super Doctors is published annually in December. Texas Rising Stars is published in July.
