Fellowship
A Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, JPS Maxillofacial Oncology and Reconstructive Surgery treats patients with oral, head and neck cancer, skin cancer, and perform microvascular reconstruction, thyroid surgery, local and regional flaps, and trauma reconstruction.
Our division hosts the only Maxillofacial Oncology and Reconstructive Surgery Fellowship in Texas. Fellows are selected to spend two years with our department, which manages a wide variety of challenging oncologic and reconstructive problems.
The fellowship is intended to provide surgeons with the ability to enter either an academic or private practice setting with a focus on Maxillofacial Oncology and Reconstructive Surgery. An intense exposure to the management of the Maxillofacial Oncology patient is provided through a hybrid academic/private practice setting. Emphasis is placed on managing a hospital-based Maxillofacial surgery practice. The fellowship is two years in duration and enrolls one fellow each year. The first year is focused on ablative surgery, while the second year focuses on reconstructive surgery. The fellows obtain experience in major head and neck oncologic surgery including oral and oropharyngeal cancer, salivary gland tumors, skin cancer, and complex airway management.
Applications for the fellowship are received each year from all across the United States. Fellowship candidates are required to complete an accredited four-to-six-year residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. After completion of the fellowship, the fellow will be eligible to sit for the CAQ (Certificate of Added Qualifications) exam by the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and will be eligible to obtain full medical/dental licensing in Texas.
