JPS Health Network’s cancer treatment programs have had their accreditation renewed by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer.
It’s a prestigious designation that shows the dedication of the health network to providing the best care possible for Oncology patients.
“We have been accredited by American College of Surgeons since 2012,” said Dr. Bassam Ghabach, Medical Director of the JPS Oncology and Infusion Center. “We successfully had our accreditation renewed this year. That speaks to the quality of cancer care available at JPS, from prevention to detection to treatment of cancer.”
While the new JPS Oncology and Infusion Center, which opened in the spring, makes it easier and more efficient to get treatment for cancer, Ghabach said there are many other reasons that contributed to the renewal of certification.
“With the opening of the new Oncology and Infusion Center, we’ve been able to integrate more of the cancer care process under one roof,” Ghabach said, noting that Maxillofacial Oncology & Reconstructive Surgery doctors have recently begun meeting with patients at the new center instead of requiring them to make an additional visit to the main JPS Campus. “When it comes to cancer care at JPS, multiple departments are involved. We all work together from primary care physicians to the Radiology Department to Surgery, Oncology and Pathology.”
The recognition serves as validation of the exceptional efforts team members at JPS – not only in the Oncology and Infusion Center but across the network – make every day to fight cancer, according to Executive Director, Nursing Community Health Administration Jill Farrell.
“Accreditation by the ACOS Commission on Cancer is a voluntary quality program,” Farrell said. “As a part of this accreditation, The JPS Oncology and Infusion Center demonstrates our cancer care program’s commitment to providing high quality, patient-centered care for the patients we treat in Tarrant County. Achieving this accreditation validates the great care and service that we provide our cancer patients at JPS.”
According to its website, the Commission on Cancer is a consortium of professional organizations dedicated to improving survival and quality of life for cancer patients through standard-setting, prevention, research, education, and the monitoring of comprehensive quality care. The Commission on Cancer has been involved in the definition and recognition of quality cancer care for over 80 years. This organization is governed by representatives from 52 professional cancer care advocacy organizations. They have been a leader in the development and implementation of quality metrics for patient centered cancer care.
“The Commission on Cancer, a program of the American College of Surgeons, recognizes cancer care programs for their commitment to providing comprehensive, high-quality, and multidisciplinary patient centered care,” the organization states on its website. “The CoC is dedicated to improving survival and quality of life for cancer patients through standard-setting, prevention, research, education, and the monitoring of comprehensive quality care.”
While JPS cancer care isn’t just about the new Oncology and Infusion Center, Ghabach said the building has helped streamline treatment for patients by serving as a hub for services.
“We’re integrating more of our cancer care within one building and patients are raving about how much easier it is to navigate from one appointment or service to the next,” Ghabach said. “We’re constantly evolving and getting better at what we do. We’ll never stop trying to get better.”
