SHINE at JPS Health Network High School Students

The SHINE Program is an eight-week, paid summer internship for Tarrant County high school students who are curious about healthcare and eager to learn through real-world expereinces. Students gain exposure to both clinical and non-clinical settings across JPS Health Network, build strong professional skills and begin shaping a future in healthcare, all while earning pay and have the opportunity to earn industry-recognized certifications.

Program Details


Who Can Apply

  • Students ages 16–18 as of June 1, 2026
  • Graduation date (completed or planned) between December 2025 and June 2027
  • Live and attend (or have recently graduated) from high school in Tarrant County
  • Available for the full internship period (June 1 - July 30, 2026)

Program Structure

  • Participants: 30 high school students from Tarrant County high schools
  • Duration: 8 weeks, June 1 – July 30, 2026 (off June 29 – July 3)
  • Schedule: Approximately 25–30 hours per week, Monday through Thursday
  • Attendance: Students must be available for the full 8 weeks of the program

What Students Will Experience


During the SHINE program, students will:

  • Gain hands-on exposure in clinical and non-clinical environments and learn alongside healthcare professionals across JPS
  • Explore a wide range of healthcare careers and build professional skills including communication, teamwork, and professionalism
  • Develop clarity around college and career pathways in healthcare

At the conclusion of the program, students are eligible to earn entry-level healthcare certifications, such as:

  • Patient Care Technician (PCT): Learn skills to provide direct patient care, including basic nursing assistance and monitoring vital signs.
  • Electrocardiogram (EKG) Technician: Train to operate EKG machines and interpret cardiac rhythms for patient diagnostics.
  • Phlebotomist: Gain expertise in drawing blood samples for medical testing, transfusions, and research. These credentials give students a valuable head start and prepare them for entry-level roles after high school.

During the application window, students applying for the SHINE program will submit:

  • Basic contact information
  • Two references
  • A one-minute video explaining their interest in SHINE and what they hope to gain

Selected students will complete a supplemental employment application and undergo standard preemployment screening, including a background check and occupational health requirements
