Program Overview
The Transitional Year Residency Program is one of the longest standing residency programs at John Peter Smith Hospital. Established in 1970s, the TY program is an ACGME accredited, one-year residency program designed for medical school graduates who have chosen a specialty that requires a general residency internship as a prerequisite. The TY Program is structured to give residents broad exposure to the basic areas of medicine to provide fundamental skills training. The Transitional Year Program is a 12-month program that accepts 12 residents entering specialties such as Anesthesia, Dermatology, Physical Medicine/Rehabilitation, and Radiology.
Mission Statement:
Provide compassionate and high-quality healthcare to the vulnerable, high-risk patients of Tarrant County and the communities we serve. Additionally, to train superb clinicians who will develop the necessary skills to become leaders in patient care, medical education, and research.
Rotations include:
- Critical Care Medicine*
- Emergency Medicine
- General Surgery
- Internal Medicine
- Pediatrics
- Research
- Electives
UNIQUE ASPECTS OF THE PROGRAM
Transitional residents have a broad exposure on all services and interact with senior residents and faculty. They are the first to see the patient and participate in the management and procedures for all patients. Our training program is a hands-on type of program. There is quality supervision and teaching on all services. Each resident also has teaching opportunities and typically works one on one with a third or fourth year medical student.
