Our Approach to Care
At JPS, patients remain at the center of every decision.
Our forensic nurses explain each step of care, answer questions, and respect each patient’s choices throughout the process. Patients may decline any part of an examination and can request a pause or stop at any time. We understand that every person’s experience is different. Our goal is to create an environment where patients feel heard, respected, and supported.
About Our Program
For more than 25 years, JPS Health Network has provided specialized medical care, forensic services, and compassionate support for people who have experienced violence. As home to one of North Texas’ first Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) programs, JPS has a long history of caring for survivors with dignity, respect, and understanding.
Recognizing a growing need for specialized care beyond sexual assault, JPS expanded its forensic nursing services to support individuals affected by other forms of violence, including intimate partner violence (IPV). This expansion was informed by the experiences of patients seeking care during the COVID-19 pandemic, when many survivors faced additional barriers to accessing medical services and finding safety.
Today, JPS Forensic Nursing Services brings together specialized clinical expertise, trauma-informed care, and a commitment to helping patients feel safe, supported, and empowered throughout their care.
What Is a Forensic Nurse Examiner
A Forensic Nurse Examiner (FNE) is a registered nurse with advanced training in caring for individuals who have experienced violence or trauma. These nurses provide specialized medical assessments, address patients’ physical and emotional needs, document injuries, and collect forensic evidence when appropriate.
Forensic nurses work at the intersection of health care and the legal system and may also serve as expert witnesses in court proceedings.
Community Education
Our Forensic Nurse Examiners also help educate the community about violence, trauma, prevention, and available resources. Our team may provide educational presentations for schools, healthcare organizations, community groups, or other partners. For more information, email SANEFNE@jpshealth.org.
