The doctors, nurses, therapists, medical assistants, surgical technologists and office staff are well trained and have years of experience. Our residents work alongside other training programs at John Peter Smith Hospital including: Orthopaedic, Family Medicine, General Surgery, Emergency Medicine, Pediatrics, Obstetrics, Sports Medicine and Psychiatry.

We are committed to providing you with training and education that is second to none in every way. Our group of staff physicians in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is well trained, easy to approach and communicates with one another. The collaboration begins with medical students who spend time with us and continues with all of the residents at our hospital.

The patients treated at our hospital range in age from children who are only a few weeks old with deformities to elderly suffering from a variety of medical conditions. As a Level I Trauma Center and county hospital, we have a high volume of trauma cases as well as a diverse clinical experience to facilitate a well-rounded experience.

We offer unparalleled training and experience to those who choose to spend time with us, whether it be for a few weeks as medical students or several years as residents. We appreciate you considering us for your training.

Unique aspects of the program

• The program was established at John Peter Smith Hospital in 1991. It began as a one year program and has evolved into its current status as of 2005.
• JPS Health Network has a Podiatric Medical & Surgical Residency Program 36 months (PM&S - 36). Currently two residents per year are accepted.
• The department of Orthopedics and Division of Foot and Ankle Surgery educates residents who, upon completion of three year training, will exhibit the knowledge and psychomotor skills equivalent to an orthopedic surgeon fellowship trained in foot and ankle surgery.
• The goal of the PGY-1 year is to prepare the resident for two years of intensive training in patient care as well as foot and ankle surgery.
• The PGY-1 year is spent on six months in Podiatry and six months on rotations with other services.
• The PGY-2 year is spent almost exclusively with the Podiatry Service.
• The PGY-3 year is spent rotating between Podiatric and Orthopaedic surgeons specializing in foot and ankle. The third year resident is in charge of all schedules, surgical scheduling, coding of clinics and surgeries and overseeing the junior residents and medical students.
