The JPS Health Network PGY1 & PGY2 Pharmacy Residency Programs strive to develop highly qualified independent practitioners able to provide patient-centered care in various clinical settings. Residents provide direct care, education to healthcare providers, and actively participate in research and scholarly activity. Pharmacists completing this program will be capable of conducting their practice with a high level of maturity and leadership.

PGY1 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.
The JPS PGY1 pharmacy residency is designed to prepare the resident to independently practice in an acute care setting. The resident will be exposed to a diverse patient population in a multidisciplinary teaching environment. Residents will be actively involved in precepting, medication safety, research, and stewardship activities. The graduating resident will be a competitive candidate for PGY2 residency or a hospital clinical pharmacist position.

- Residents will be required to staff every 3rd weekend as an independent Decentralized Clinical Pharmacist.
- Residents will also staff one evening monthly in Central Pharmacy for the first half of the residency year and the Emergency Department the second half of the year.
Each resident will complete a formal IRB-approved research project to be presented at the JPS Research Symposium and other designated showcases. A final manuscript is required upon residency completion.

A: JPS Health Network currently offers two PGY1 Pharmacy Residency positions. We do hope to expand our program in the near future. The institution additionally offers two PGY2 Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Residency positions.

Q: How flexible are the rotation schedules?
A: All residents will complete Orientation in July and Pharmacy Administration and Leadership in December. The remaining required and elective rotations can be scheduled based on resident preference, if there is preceptor availability. Rotation schedules will be evaluated quarterly. Elective rotations can be interchanged based on the resident's interests.
Q: What teaching opportunities are available for residents?
A: Residents will have the opportunity to precept pharmacy students from Texas Tech University, University of Texas at Austin and University of North Texas alongside our clinical pharmacists. Residents will also be incorporated into formal presentations presented to nursing and family medicine residents. Additionally, residents will have the opportunity to obtain a Teaching Certificate and lead didactic lectures at the University of North Texas Health Science Center College Of Pharmacy.

A: Residents are required to complete an IRB-approved research project and submit a final manuscript upon the completion of the residency year. In addition to medication use evaluations, drug class reviews and other quality projects that can be undertaken during the program, we offer the opportunity for our residents to further development skills aiding in Academia through partnering with the University of North Texas Health Science Center College of Pharmacy.

The JPS Health Network's ASHP-Candidate status PGY2 Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Residency is a 12 month residency focused on preparing the resident in all aspects of ambulatory care at an advanced level. This includes direct therapy management for chronic diseases, education of patients and other healthcare providers with varying levels of pharmacy knowledge, and research. The residency aims to accomplish three major goals: development of a confident, independent clinical practitioner through understanding of evidence-based guidelines and therapy, appropriately communicate therapeutic plans to the healthcare team within the electronic medical record and provide appropriate follow-up. The resident will also gain experience precepting pharmacy students as well as providing education to other healthcare practitioners including medical residents and nursing staff. Lastly, the resident will gain experience in completing a research project to contribute to the medical literature.

The program consists of a 12-month period of longitudinal experiences in all aspects of Ambulatory Care practice. The program is flexible in that it will adapt to the needs of the individual ambulatory care pharmacy resident. Nevertheless, the program will provide the basic foundation for quality ambulatory care practice.
The program incorporates traditional models of ambulatory care throughout the JPS Health Network clinic sites. This exposure allows the residents to experience similarities and differences of various ambulatory care practice settings so they are prepared for any setting.
